18 Here is [room for] discernment [a call for the wisdom of interpretation]. Let anyone who has intelligence (penetration and insight enough) calculate the number of the beast, for it is a human number [the number of a certain man]; his number is 666.
The beasts number, the last Pope’s number is 666. The number 6 represents the worship of man, and is the number of man, signifying his rebellion, imperfection, works, and disobedience. The number six is used 273 times in the Bible, including its derivatives (e.g, sixth) and another 91 times as “threescore” or “60.” Man was created on the sixth day (Genesis 1:26, 31). See also Exodus 31:15 and Daniel 3:1.
I am by no means a Greek scholar, but from most of what I have studied on this topic, the letters in the name of the anti-christ will add up to 666. Greek letters are given numbers: alpha is 1, beta 2, and so on. For instance Jesus’ name in Greek (iasous) adds up to 888. So whoever the anti-christ is, his name will add up to, when spelled in Greek, 666. Since the anti-christ’s name is never given to us, Jesus shows John a way for us to know who it is. John was not permitted to reveal what the seven thunders said to him. They could have very well been saying the specifics of who the anti-christ and false prophet will be, but that is just me guessing, and what good is that?
Here is what will bring us great peace: that when the anti-christ is finally revealed, the true church will clearly know who and what he is. Our Father will make sure that we do, because if we take his side, we are told that there is no coming back. People do put a lot of effort into trying and figuring out who the anti-christ is though, when the Bible clearly tells us that he will not be revealed until the end times.
We have not been given a spirit of fear, but one of faith, love, and a sound mind, 2 Timothy 1:7. We have not been appointed to our Father’s wrath, 1 Thessalonians 5:9. What brings us peace when we read all of this about the end times is that we know beyond any shadow of a doubt that our Father will still operate with Grace. Our Father is Love, 1 John 4:8, and even during these times, He does not stop loving. Our Father’s wrath is against evil and sin, not the humans who are caught up in all of it. The wrath of the Great Tribulation is not meant to destroy the disobedient but to set them free. Our Father is not so insecure that He will torture people, kill them, throw them into Hades to be further tortured, then raise them up, give them back their bodies, only to throw them into a worse place called Hell, to torture them forever. That is what dictators do, not our Father. Grace and Love will discipline, but never leave or forsake!
