Galatians 5:2-4

2 Notice, it is I, Paul, who tells you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no profit (advantage, avail) to you [for if you distrust Him, you can gain nothing from Him].

3 I once more protest and testify to every man who receives circumcision that he is under obligation and bound to practice the whole of the Law and its ordinances.

What we are being told here is that if we trust in any Law, even the Ten Commandments, to save us or to keep our favor with God, Christ is of no profit to us. I for one want Jesus to be of profit for me. Jesus got the people off who murdering Him, Luke 23:54. Jesus got an adulterous woman free from the death penalty, John 8:10-11. I never really see the Ten Commandments working for anyone? But I do see Jesus being very successful.

4 If you seek to be justified and declared righteous and to be given a right standing with God through the Law, you are brought to nothing and so separated (severed) from Christ. You have fallen away from grace (from God's gracious favor and unmerited blessing).

If someone tells you what you have to do to have God do something in your life, then what they are telling you is that you are separated from Christ. If you believe that you have to worship on a certain day, then you have no part in Christ. If you believe that you have to give money so that God can provide for you, then you have no part in Christ. If you believe that you have to wear certain clothes or have a certain hair style, then you are separated from Christ. If you believe that any work will give you favor with our Father, then you have no grace and you are separated from Christ.

All of these kind of works sound so religious and right, but they all drive the focus and attention towards our flesh and not towards Jesus and therefore they are anti-christ. In Christ we will work, but we will work because it is our Father within us doing His works, John 14:10. Our Father will use us to do great and wonderful things like raise the dead, heal the sick, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, comfort the widows and orphans, prophesy, perform miracles, love, forgive, intercede, and cast out demons, John 14:12. Yet these works are not the focus, Jesus is the focus, love is the focus. Works do not justify us or empower us, Jesus does. These things are just works. We marvel not at the works that our Father does through us, we marvel at our Father’s grace, Luke 10:20.

I am the Vine; you are the branches. Whoever lives in Me and I in him bears much (abundant) fruit. However, apart from Me [cut off from vital union with Me] you can do nothing. John 15:5

I have strength for all things in Christ Who empowers me [I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him Who infuses inner strength into me; I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency]. Philippians 4:13
