Sermon On The Mount: Part 17

It has also been said, Whoever divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce. But I tell you, Whoever dismisses and repudiates and divorces his wife, except on the grounds of unfaithfulness (sexual immorality), causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a woman who has been divorced commits adultery. Matthew 5:31-32

This is a pretty straight forward Truth, so let’s look at what the Bible teaches us about our Marriage with Jesus.

For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. This mystery is very great, but I speak concerning [the relation of] Christ and the church. Ephesians 5:31-32

Jesus is our Husband and we are His Bride, so with this Truth let’s look at what Jesus said about divorce. Jesus tells us plainly that it is up to the husband to give the letter of divorce. The bride is not the one who gives the divorce it is the husband.

Let your character or moral disposition be free from love of money [including greed, avarice, lust, and craving for earthly possessions] and be satisfied with your present [circumstances and with what you have]; for He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down (relax My hold on you)! [Assuredly not!] Hebrews 13:5

For God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable. [He never withdraws them when once they are given, and He does not change His mind about those to whom He gives His grace or to whom He sends His call.] Romans 11:29

And may the God of peace Himself sanctify you through and through [separate you from profane things, make you pure and wholly consecrated to God]; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved sound and complete [and found] blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah). Faithful is He Who is calling you [to Himself] and utterly trustworthy, and He will also do it [fulfill His call by hallowing and keeping you]. 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

Our Husband will never leave us and He will never forsake us. Our salvation, or our marriage to Jesus, is a gift and it will never be withdrawn and Jesus is faithful and trustworthy to make sure that we are kept. I think this is an awesome part of the Sermon on the Mount, because when I read it I know that Jesus will never divorce me. Once saved, always saved, you bet ya, because it is based on our Father’s Grace and not our works!
