And Jesus said to him, I will come and restore
him. But the centurion replied to Him, Lord, I am not
worthy or fit to have You come under my roof; but only speak the word,
and my servant boy will be cured. Matthew 8:7-8
When Jesus heard
him, He marveled and said to those who followed Him [who adhered steadfastly to
Him, conforming to His example in living and, if need be, in dying also], I
tell you truly, I have not found so much faith as this with anyone, even in
Israel. Matthew 8:10
Look at what the Centurion
said to Jesus: he wasn’t worthy. The Centurion didn’t ask what he needed to do
to be worthy so that he could then ask. He didn’t ask for forgiveness before
making his request. He just told Jesus that he wasn’t any good and that he
needed help. When Jesus heard him, He proclaimed that He had never seen such
great faith. This is an awesome Truth that we are shown here, the Truth that Jesus
doesn’t care or need for us to be good for Him to first act in our lives. The
Truth is actually that none of us are good or can be good anyway.
Jesus said to him, Why do you call Me [essentially and perfectly morally] good? No one is [essentially and perfectly morally] good—except God only. Luke 18:19
For God has consigned
(penned up) all men to
disobedience, only that He may have mercy
on them all [alike]. Romans 11:32
What the Centurion was
saying to Jesus is that he couldn’t do anything about his problem. He was being
completely humble here. The Centurion needed Jesus to do it all for him. The Centurion
was being honest and real. He was not being all religious and showy. This is
what our Father wants from us and this is what the Holy Spirit is causing us
all to be. Our Father will take us to places where we completely realize that
it has to be Him. He will cause us to realize that we can never be good enough,
but in that revelation we will come to understand that it doesn’t matter to our
Father. We will realize that His compassion for us far outweighs our shortcomings.
So for the sake of
Christ, I am well pleased and take pleasure in infirmities, insults,
hardships, persecutions, perplexities and distresses; for when I
am weak [in human strength],
then am I [truly] strong (able,
powerful in divine strength). 2 Corinthians 12:10
None of us is good, but
that doesn’t matter for one second, because greater is He that is in us, then
us who are in this world.
Little children, you
are of God [you belong to Him] and have [already] defeated and overcome
them [the agents of the antichrist], because He Who lives in you
is greater (mightier) than he who is in the world. 1
John 4:4
