So What Exactly Is Blasphemy Of The Holy Spirit?

And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Matthew 12:31

So what is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit? The Bible never really tells us. The closest thing that we are ever told about it comes in Matthew 12. The only unforgivable sin seems to involve people in positions of power who try to have the people rely on themselves and not on God. This will be the sin of the anti-christ. It is the sin of perceived leaders believing and persuading others to believe and put their trust in man and not in God, thus being ant-christ. Not being anti-god or anti-Jesus, but anti the power of our Father working through us. It is the sin that put’s trust in the works of man. We can see this in Matthew 12 where the religious leaders were jealous of the Holy Spirit using people who they thought to be just commoners to perform miracles. So the leaders said that it was satan and not the Holy Spirit doing the works through the disciples. They were attempting to take the glory of our Father away from the masses.

Many will say to Me on that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name and driven out demons in Your name and done many mighty works in Your name? And then I will say to them openly (publicly), I never knew you; depart from Me, you who act wickedly [disregarding My commands]. Matthew 7:22-24

Jesus shows us that these beings will take credit for what they did. They will say that they did the works in Jesus’ name, but they are anti-christ, because they will proclaim what they did, not what Christ did through them. They will credit the works of our Father to man and themselves and not to the Holy Spirit; they will blasphemy the Holy Spirit. This sin is unforgivable. Yet this sin is also very, and I do mean very difficult, to commit. Even if this is what blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is and to be very honest I am not sure. I am just taking what the leaders did right before Jesus told them that they were in danger of committing blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. As we discussed earlier the Bible never tells us plainly what this sin is. Which I believe is very telling. If this sin is unforgivable and can readily be committed, don't you think that our Father would plainly tell us what it is? But He never does?

Look at the Jewish Leaders who lied about Jesus. They tried to constantly discredit His works. They attempted to persuade the masses that it was satan doing the works and not the Holy Spirit. They constantly denied that Jesus was the Messiah. They had Jesus tortured, then killed, and yet Jesus still forgave them. So they did not even commit it. Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is an incredibly rare sin and while Jesus tells us that it will be committed, in the parable of the Marriage Supper He only refers to one who has. I mean if the Jewish leaders didn’t commit it, then who has? So the answer to the question, what is Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, cannot be answered with scripture. So if anyone tries to tell you that they definitely know, ask them for scriptural proof.
