Revelation 20:9-10

9 And they swarmed up over the broad plain of the earth and encircled the fortress (camp) of God’s people (the saints) and the beloved city; but fire descended from heaven and consumed them.
  • Those who follow satan will be destroyed. The fire, or power, of our Father will consume them.
  • These people may die and have to go to Hades for a very brief time. Remember that is not necessarily a bad thing, Hades has a way of changing people, just like with the Rich Ruler in Jesus’ parable of the Rich Ruler and Lazarus.
  • But if any person’s work is burned up [under the test], he will suffer the loss [of it all, losing his reward], though he himself will be saved, but only as [one who has passed] through fire. 1 Corinthians 3:15
  • These people may also see the Holy Spirit and be consumed with the Truth that will set them free as they are surrounding the believers? Either way Jesus will win. He has been given control over all mankind and He will give eternal life to all that He has been given, John 17:2.
10 Then the devil who had led them astray [deceiving and seducing them] was hurled into the fiery lake of burning brimstone, where the beast and false prophet were; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever (through the ages of the ages).
  • Something that strikes me here is that our Father tells us that the Lake of Fire is where that anti-christ and false prophet were, not that they are there, but that they were there.
  • Also we are told that only satan is thrown into the Lake here, not those who just had followed him.
  • Fire can destroy things and it can also cleanse things, just like it does with precious metals.
  • Such people will pay the penalty and suffer the punishment of everlasting ruin (destruction and perdition) and eternal exclusion and banishment from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 1 Thessalonians 1:9
  • Yet for us there is [only] one God, the Father, Who is the Source of all things and for Whom we [have life], and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through and by Whom are all things and through and by Whom we [ourselves exist]. 1 Corinthians 8:6
  • For it was in Him that all things were created, in heaven and on earth, things seen and things unseen, whether thrones, dominions, rulers, or authorities; all things were created and exist through Him [by His service, intervention] and in and for Him. And He Himself existed before all things, and in Him all things consist (cohere, are held together). Colossians 1:16-17
  • For it was an act worthy [of God] and fitting [to the divine nature] that He, for Whose sake and by Whom all things have their existence, in bringing many sons into glory, should make the Pioneer of their salvation perfect [should bring to maturity the human experience necessary to be perfectly equipped for His office as High Priest] through suffering. Hebrews 2:10
  • So for these verses to be true whatever is thrown into the Lake of Fire has to cease to be. If they still existed once thrown into the Lake, then they could not be banished from the presence and the power of our Omnipotent Father. Because our Father's power is what allows the Lake of Fire even be.
  • Their torment is that they can never return into being. Just like death and Hades will never return once they are thrown into the Lake of Fire.
